ZiM’s mixes are designed as long-form journeys, but also as a coherent system: music, hardware, software and power should align.

This page is a synthesis of ideas developed in ZiM’s “Explorations sonores” blog:
• Energy sobriety and autonomy
• Low-tech, repairable gear
• Open-source software and digital sobriety
• Creativity through constraints

The 4 pillars
————-

1) Energy sobriety first (then renewables)
ZiM approaches energy like a system: reduce needs first (sobriety), then cover the remaining needs with renewable, durable solutions when possible. This mindset comes from a permaculture-like “design for resilience” approach.

2) Renewable power, when it makes sense
A coherent sound experience can include renewable electricity — for example a solar-powered sound system — so the party does not contradict the values it celebrates.

3) Digital sobriety: open-source tools
ZiM chose Mixxx, a free/open-source DJ software, to reduce dependency on proprietary ecosystems that can push subscriptions, locked features, and frequent hardware renewal. Open-source is also about autonomy: transparency, the ability to adapt, and long-term durability.

4) Low-tech hardware: extend, repair, master
Instead of chasing the latest laptop, ZiM extends the life of existing machines (some ~15 years old) by upgrading what matters for reliability (SSD, RAM, cleaning/maintenance) and by keeping the setup stable. That reduces “invisible” footprint (manufacturing, transport, materials) and increases predictability in live conditions.

What it changes for your event
——————————
• A lighter footprint without compromising musical intensity.
• A reliable, well-tested setup — less “surprises” on stage.
• A DJ practice that treats the dancefloor as an ecosystem: balance, diversity, progressive energy.

In short: sustainability as a creative frame
——————————————–
Sobriety is not a limitation.
